A report from Motor Trend suggests that the next rotary-powered RX from Mazda could be a hybrid. Since Mazda and Toyota signed an agreement in 2010 that allows Mazda to license the same technology found within the Prius, a potential hybrid RX could also receive Toyota-tech.

Motor Trend reports that the successor to the existing RX-8 will not use reverse-opening rear doors. Additionally, if hybrid rumors come to fruition, the next RX could become the first rear-wheel drive hybrid sports car.

The rotary engine has long been a fixture of the RX sports car, but it has two flaws. First is its low torque. Second is its poor fuel economy. With the addition of a hybrid powertrain, those two weaknesses could be addressed.

Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive technology typically uses a continuously variable automatic transmission. While a CVT is great for fuel economy, they typically lack any driving excitement, which could be a detriment to the next RX.

Mazda has hinted that the brand’s first Toyota-powered hybrid vehicle will be available in 2013. It remains to be seen whether this model will come in the form of the next RX.
